Dani glances at me from the corner of her eye. I’ve caught her doing that a few times today.

“I can feel you looking at me,” I mumble, my eyes on my phone.

“Are you okay?”

“Of course.” Mindless scrolling through social media is a good distraction for the moment. A good way to forget.

“Naomi.” Dani moves over beside me on the sofa. “You haven’t been yourself since that party. What happened?”

No way am I relaying that story to her. No doubt she’d be enraged at her brother’s behavior, but I should’ve known better. I let his good looks and amazing voice override my common sense. Besides, Axton is the one I work for. That hasn’t changed.

Dani isn’t going to let this go and I don’t want her to worry. With a sigh, I look away from my phone. “I don’t want to talk about it. I did something incredibly stupid that I regret, but it’s over and done.” Giving her my most convincing smile, I add, “I’m fine, really.”

“All right, but I’m here if you want to talk, okay? And don’t spend too much time on that social media bullshit. The picture will be old news soon. If you haven’t been told already, never ever read the comments.”

Her eyes widen when my head jerks toward her. “What picture?”

“Shit, I thought you knew. It’s just a picture of you walking beside Ax with Caden on your hip. Some tabloid ran it with the claim that you’re the mother of his secret love child.”

Dani stares at me while I gape at her. Then the tense silence is broken when I burst out laughing. “Oh, are you serious?”

She nods with a tight grin, before giggling with me. “Yes, a few other sites have picked it up, so I assumed you’d seen it by now.”

Was that why Axton was so pissed? Just thinking about the way he left me after fucking me half to death makes shame and anger roar through me again. Does he think I put that story out there? That I want to be famous for sleeping with him? It’s so laughable. The last thing I want is for anyone to find out.

“No.” I wipe my watering eyes. “But I needed a laugh, so thanks.”

Caden pulls himself up on the edge of the couch and plops a book in my lap. It’s not surprising at his age that he won’t sit for long enough to actually read a book, even a short baby one, but he loves to watch me make the animal sounds for this one. More and more, he’s mimicking the words and sounds he hears.

“Okay, buddy, point taken,” I laugh, pulling him into my lap.

“I’m going to go lie by the pool for a bit,” Dani says.

The door doesn’t have time to close behind her before Axton walks through it. The sight of him makes me do a double take. Instead of his usual look, he’s swapped the boots for tennis shoes, his customary button up shirt for a loose tee shirt, and his hair is pulled up under a baseball cap.
